Selena
She was a singer, performer and designer who broke through the barriers of the music industry. Her dual role as the Mexican American performer was conventional and modern. She introduced Tejano into the mainstream in an innovative way. Similar to how most people grieve a celebrity who died from their prime, the death of her was premature and destroyed the progress of her career. To stop her achievements from becoming forgotten many of her fans in the last few years have been motivated to do even more. Selena was the Tejano artist who was tragically shot to death during a shooting incident, sparked an Latino reaction that could be thought of as similar to the reactions to John Lennon's deaths. An enormously popular singer within Latino communities across North America her music crossed borders of culture to impact the lives of children and old alike. Selena was a hot, flamboyant performer on stage and was often referred to by the Latina Madonna. Off-stage Selena was an outstanding role model, as she participated actively in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
